FUNDRAISING BRAIN STORM !

From Laurel  Dec 5, 2003
Perhaps there would not be enough time to put together this idea for a project for this year, but how about the Friends offering a two hour segment some Saturday morning before Christmas to mylar books that people have purchased and would be giving for gifts.
Mylar is that lovely "plastic" wrap that our books come wrapped up in and protect the book.

We could order the supplies form the necessary distributor and it would be easy to train a few people to provide this service. Perhaps $1.00 per book covered or whatever depending upon the cost of our supplies.

Mission Statement:

help by raising funds for non-budgeted amenities that make the library more welcoming, special books and periodicals, and provide help with programs and public relations to keep the library prominent in the eyes of the community.

is a volunteer organization whose purpose is to support the library by supplying volunteers, helping to and promoting special events, and conducting fundraising efforts.

Friends of the Public Library believe that the strength of a library lies not only in its collection of books and materials but also in its programs and services. Friends also believe that libraries are for everyone – all ages, income levels, ethnic origins and all neighborhoods and geographic regions of the community.

Friends share the sentiment expressed by Andrew Carnegie one hundred years ago:

“A library out ranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people.”
        - Andrew Carnegie

The Friends help with library-sponsored events and activities by helping with registrations, promoting membership, and set-up and clean up.

Library Subscriptions

Andrew Carnegie insisted that the libraries he helped to create were kept 'free'. He was concerned that later cuts in municipal budgets could lead to admission charges for library use.

The Trustee's of such libraries had to accept a form of agreement which specifically stated "The Library shall be free to the people forever........."

In many of these libraries he insisted that the word "Free" be engraved in stone on the building to ensure that the library would always be free to the public.
