The collection at the Blair Public Library consists of 33,000+ materials which includes currently published juvenile and adult fiction and nonfiction books, significant books of the past and present, newspapers, books on tape and CD, videos, books in large print, popular magazines, local genealogical references, and current editions of the most useful reference books.

Juvenile Books
The Juvenile (or Children's) collection includes picture books, easy readers, chapter books, graphic novels and young adult books.

Large-Print Titles
Books printed in large type can be helpful to many people. People may have difficulty reading normal size print for any of a number of reasons or may simply like to read large print. Those who benefit from large print books include the following:

  • Senior Citizens
  • The Visually Impaired
  • Stationary Bicycle and Treadmill Users
  • Speed Readers
  • Students with Reading Difficulties
  • Patients Recovering from Head Injury or Stroke

Audio Books
(also known as books on tape, talking books and Recorded Books) are available in both abridged and unabridged format.   The books are read (often by celebrities or people with voices suited for recording).  Often include 2-8 cassette tapes or 2-4 Compact Disks (CDs.) Audio Books are especially valuable to people:

  • with low vision who find reading print either difficult
  • travel or comminute
  • who exercise and enjoy listening
  • like to enjoy a book together

Video Tapes (VHS)
The Blair Public Library owns over one thousand videos. The Video checkout period is 4 videos for 4 days. To check out a video you must be 17 years of age and have a valid library card. The library video collection consists of many popular children's, award winning, classical, and nonfiction videos. Fines for overdue videos are $1.00 per video per day.

Newspapers
The Blair Public Library subscribes to the following newspapers:

  • Omaha World Herald
  • Blair Enterprise/ Pilot-Tribune
  • Fremont Tribune
  • USA Today
  • Wall Street Journal
  • Sunday Issue of the New York Times

Newspapers are not checked out.  The library policy is to keep back issues of newspapers for 90 days.  The Blair newspapers are kept until a microfilm copy is purchased.

Newspapers on Microfilm
The library owns a collection of back issues of local newspapers dating to the late 1800's.  This collection is on microfilm and may be viewed at the library.   Patrons may view microfilm of back issues of newspapers at the library on a microfilm reader. The library will interlibrary loan microfilm to other libraries (library use only) two rolls at a time at no charge.  See complete list of the newspapers on microfilm.


Magazines
The Blair Public Library subscribes to over 100 popular magazines. The library retains back issues of magazines for two full years plus the current year. The newest issue of a magazine is kept in the library to be read by patrons at the library. The back issues may be checked out for three weeks.

Reference Section
Books in the reference section of the library include items as dictionaries, encyclopedias, Blair City Code Book, almanacs, set of the Nebraska State Statues… These books are used for quick reference and are not checked out.

Genealogical Collection
The genealogical reference section includes copies of Nebraska histories, locally published histories, copies of cemetery records, copies of 1856-1899 marriage license records, and donated family histories. Also included in this section are books to help the family researcher. Most items in this section do not check out to patrons.
